The success of this installation came from the boldness of the mural, and the interaction of people taking printed postcards from the mailbox, while engaging in conversation. By painting the slogan “Save the Waves” + the instagram handle @coastal.postal, people saw where to follow up for info on how to preserve our coastlines. Four different postcards could be picked from the mailbox, each representing a beach in California. Students came up and took pictures of the mural, posting stories of it on Instagram. People even imagined the painting as a perfect highway sign or mural downtown, saying that it was a very creative way to bring awareness. I observed a shared love for the ocean and a care to protect the waves that everyone appreciates so much, whether for surfing, swimming, or looking at. “Save the Waves” was successful in bringing light to our common goal of being faithful stewards of the Earth to help preserve the beautiful environment.
